New Water Supply

The project will provide 56,000 acre-feet per year of new local water supply - enough water to meet the needs of nearly 225,000 people. The project could be expanded to twice this capacity in the future.

Improved Water Quality

The technology employed in the desalination facility will produce extremely high quality drinking water.

Avoided Cost

The availability of this new supply could delay or completely avoid expenditure for facilities that would otherwise be required to expand the local and regional water delivery systems' capacity.

Economic Development

The project will result in increased regional spending of approximately $170 million and the creation of 2,100 jobs during construction. When operational, it will generate an additional $37 million in annual spending and create 400 permanent jobs.

Public Support

Carlsbad's water reliability goal, and bold initiative to secure the city's long-term economic viability through a Water Purchase Agreement with Poseidon Resources, is overwhelming supported by Carlsbad residents. In July 2004, Decision Research conducted a poll on behalf of Poseidon Resources Corporation of 300 registered voters in the City of Carlsbad. The results showed that Carlsbad residents gave the City high marks and put a priority on the community's water supply:

Carlsbad residents overwhelmingly believe that things in the City of Carlsbad are on the right track, and nearly all agree that it is important for city officials to ensure Carlsbad has adequate and affordable supplies of water in the future. In fact, almost 90 percent support the Council's goal to achieve water reliability.
More than 80 percent favor the Carlsbad desalination project, and three out of four favor co-locating with the Encina Power Station to take advantage of the existing infrastructure and ready power supply.
The key issues of importance to the community are local control over supply reliability and price, new revenues for the City, public beach access, and understanding that the plant will not have any significant impact on the ocean.
In addition, the experience of Poseidon and the company's role in protecting the City from risk, as well as the benefits of co-location, are important factors that have earned this widespread community support.
